The Atlanta 3 Day Breast Cancer Walk: 0-60 In 3 Days

Our adventure in Atlanta began when two lovely ladies with gold balls dancing above their heads picked us up at the MARTA station and delivered us to the registration site. We had many great experiences over the weekend and met many wonderful people. On Day 2, I met two young women from Atlanta. I mentioned I was from Indiana and we would be flying home late Sunday evening. They asked where we were going to shower and change after the walk. I never thought about being hot, tired, dirty and smelly after walking 20 miles in the heat. They said we couldn't possibly get on the plane without taking a shower first and invited us to come to their house. They picked us up after the walk, took us to their house in Cabbage Town. We took wonderful hot showers. They fed us and then took us to the MARTA station to get the train to the airport. All the time their friends and families were waiting at a neighborhood restaurant to celebrate with them. They were just so gracious and wonderful. Everybody was wonderful.

About 2,500 people participated in the walk: 175 men, 200 breast cancer survivors and all 2,500 had lost friends and family members to breast cancer.

What I Was Not Prepared For

  • The heat, humidity and the hills

Some of the highlights in no particular order.

I packed trail mix because that ís what people eat on long walks. It was really good and I added extra whole almonds because I really like them. However it is not a good idea to pack a trail mix with yummy chocolate when the temperature is near 90 degrees.

Porta Potties. The good thing about waking up in the middle of the night several times and making the long trek to the Porta Potties is it was a great opportunity to say to myself oh I am still alive and I can walk, yes!

Porta Potties. The first morning I used the porta potty I thought...gosh they have lights in them I can see. I wonder why they werenít turned on last night?

I forgot to pack any underwear. Underwear does not dry out over night in the rain and humidity.

I forgot to pack any extra clothes. When I wasnít walking, I was wearing my Minnie Mouse night shirt all over camp. I noticed there were some other ladies in their nighties at dinner.

The Super Target my new place of worship. When you walk 20 miles it ís really hard to bring yourself to walk even an extra block. On Saturday luckily I passed a Super Target and could do some shopping. It was clean and air conditioned. While I was in there, I made some phone calls, used a real toilet, washed my hands in running water (the best). I did not want to leave and asked if I could spend the night.

Having a chocolate Èclair for dessert Saturday night and then having another one and not worrying about the calories.

Things They Do Not Really Need On 3 Day Walks

Mirrors in Porta Potties ....really seeing how I looked every hour was not a good thing.

What Really Surprised Me

After Day 1, I thought I would never be able to get up and walk on Saturday but I did. Then Saturday night I thought I can not possibly get up and walk another 20 miles, but I did.

I am so glad I had an opportunity to participate. There will most likely never be a 3-Day. The Atlanta event raised over 2 million dollars for research and to provide health care for underserved and uninsured women. For the people participating, it was a life altering experience. What Palotta Teamworks, the sponsor of the 3 Days, had to offer was unique. People who participated as crewmembers and walkers went beyond what they ever thought possible and for many people their reality was forever altered. Thank you all for your support.
